Spring Scalping
Spring Scalping gives your warm season lawn a fresh start to the growing season. Level Lawns can do the heavy lifting and help you avoid the hassle and mess of performing this vital step every year.
As the weather starts to warm in Spring, your dormant and brown warm season lawn starts to "wake up". Warmer temperatures and sunlight warm the soil, which in turn activates your sleeping grass and it starts to green up and will begin growing soon. One of the best things you can do for your lawn during this transition time period is scalp it as low as possible. This allows sunlight to warm the soil faster and removes the dead/dormant blades of grass, which in turn allows new growth to begin sooner. The result is a greener, healthier lawn earlier in the growing season.
Level Lawns provides this service with high powered vacuum assisted mowers. These mowers have a high power clipping induction system that "suck up and collect" the clippings and loose thatch, leaving a clean fresh lawn ready for spring growth. Doing this yourself with a residential mower can take most of a day and leave you with dozens of bags of clippings. Our team will complete the process efficiently and haul away the clippings, leaving your lawn ready for spring growth!
The ideal time to perform Spring Scalping is typically the beginning of March for Bermuda lawns and the end of March/Early April for Zoysia lawns.
Scalping services can also help with a "height of cut reset" later in the growing season in June/July. If a warm season lawn is allowed to get too tall, it can get thick and hard to mow (known as mower floating). Scalping the turf lower, below your normal mowing height, can reset the lawn so it can be maintained normally again. This can solve the floating issue and get you through a growing season without skipping a beat.
